Date night in Mirvish Village

November 15, 2013

I'm not a fan of horror films, but I married into a family of corny horror movie-lovers, the Evil Dead franchise included (Patricio saw the musical multiple times during its run at the Diesel Playhouse). In most relationships, there is an eventual overlap when it comes to interests, and enthusiasm for certain things becomes a shared enthusiasm (because what makes them happy makes you happy, or because you genuinely convinced your husband that Harry Potter is so good that he wants to read the whole series together). So when Evil Dead: The Musical posters started surfacing in Toronto I jumped on board and we decided that we were going to see it together.

We arrived before the box office opened. In order to escape the bone-chilling cold we walked up the street and browsed around at Sonic Boom in the Annex (we just love that place). We took a few photographs as we perused the aisles, and then went on our way.

We had front row, middle balcony seats in the intimate, historical Randolph Academy Theatre (originally a Methodist church, erected in 1888). I can't be the only one who prefers balcony seats over orchestra? I loved the church pew seats and balcony lattice work.

Evil Dead: The Musical was an entertaining, campy comedy beginning-to-end. I loved the show's commitment to its low budget B-movie origins, and also to its humble musical origins from the back of the Tranzac Club in Toronto). I always love live theatre, but I think that I enjoyed the content (a few naughty jokes aside) just as much as Patricio, even though this was a "shared enthusiasm."

All in all, this date night will be hard to beat. If I had to make a list of my favourite date nights of all time, it would be in the top three!

Hope you had a great week!

P.S. We ate at the nearby One Love Vegetarian before the show, which I am kind of in love with now. Not only do they promote local and organic ingredients in their dishes, offer 100% vegetarian/vegan options, but their food is making me salivate just thinking about how I could describe it. And don't get me started on their home-brewed ginger beer - I'm bringing my Jamaican-born mum there next time to confirm that it is the best ginger beer in the entire world.
